Domenica 2 novembre, quinta giornata della Starboard Severne Aloha Classic 2014, e terza giornata per il PWA. Si sono portati avanti i double elimination maschile e femminile senza però riuscire a concluderli. La corsa al titolo tra Victor Fernandez e Thomas Traversa è ancora aperta e questa notte molto probabilmente sapremo chi sarà il nuovo Campione del Mondo Wave. Infatti per il tabellone maschile mancano solo 3 o 4 heat (a seconda se ci sarà o meno il re-sailing della finale) e in quello femminile 3.
Iballa Moreno E-63 è ufficialmente Campionessa del Mondo Wave 2014 in quanto sua sorella Daida Moreno E-64 non è riuscita a passare il primo turno.
Robby Naish e Jason Polakow passano un paio di turni e chiudono la gara rispettivamente in 7° e 8° posizione. Mentre Ricardo Campello e Graham Ezzy sono autori di due ottime performance che li hanno portati a raggiungere  rispettivamente il 6° e 5° posto in classifica. Ricardo per quest’anno deve quindi rinunciare al Titolo!

Ferdinando Loffreda anche oggi condivide con noi il suo punto di vista di questa giornata analizzando heat dopo heat.
“Tutto comincia con una giornata dalle condizioni interlocutorie, all’inizio sembrava onde over logo high ma nel giro di un’ora o due, onde che visibilmente calavano fino ad essere “chest high/over head” massimo logo ma solo sul picco dell’onda. Subito dopo si è capita la condizione: off side off, con onde che spesso erano close out!
Delucidazioni: nella condizione off- side – off, è difficile trovare spazio per il bottom turn in quanto il vento off ti spinge verso l’onda quindi bisogna per forza fare 4-5 metri in più di distanza dall’onda (come direzione, verso la spiaggia per capirci ) e innaturali bottom turn… lontani di proposito dall’onda che permettono quindi di avere spazio e fare poi con un angolo migliore top turns e di conseguenza buone surfate. Molto difficile poi capire e attuare il Rail To Rail… quindi chiunque oggi fosse riuscito a farlo, prendere uno spazio maggiore nel bottom allontanandosi dall’onda, avrebbe poi avuto la possibilità di fare top turns, passando la tavola da un rail all’altro.
Kai Katchadorian, Robby Naish e Jason Polakow sono riusciti nell’opera nelle loro heat di qualifica fino a quando non sono stati fermati da un sorprendente Ricardo Campello e Graham Ezzy che per due heat (la n° 27 e 28) hanno messo a segno belle performance con turns alla Morgan Noireaux!
Nella heat 28 con Naish, Polakow, Campello e Ezzy, questi ultimi due hanno attuato la tecnica del rail to rail e sono riusciti a buttare fuori dai giochi un bravo Polakow e un consistente Naish. Campello con un onda bottom turn -to top turn seguito da un’altissima air Taka e altri due bottom to top turns rail to rail. E Graham Ezzy altrettanti bottom turns e top turns con taka alla fine.

Nella heat 29 quindi è stata battaglia tra i due Campello – Ezzy. Ma questa volta Campello non è riuscito ad atterrare i suoi trick… anche con delle surfate decenti. I due erano comunque molto vicini e solo nel finale di heat Graham Ezzy atterra un goiter e riesce negli ultimi secondi a battere Campello per pochi punti.
Altra storia nella heat 30 tra Grahamm Ezzy e Brawzinho, dove il brasiliano ha annientato Graham con un’onda chiudendo una air taka… due bottoms turns top turns… rail to rail. Graham in questa heat è sembrato un po’ pesante e stanco.
Con il vento che continuava a calare ci si è fermati quindi alla heat n° 30. Domani si svolgeranno le quattro heat del double tra i rimasti Brawzinho, Fernandez, Traversa e Noireaux.
Grandi sia Campello che Brawzinho che hanno fatto scorse altissimi riuscendo a inserire nelle loro soprendenti “surfate alla Morgan Noireaux”  i loro bellissimi taka. Brawzinho ha addirittura ottenuto lo score più alto dell Aloha Classic da quando è iniziata la gara. Grande sorpresa dei due riders che hanno fatto un grande step up nel waveriding puro… chissà… magari… avranno la scorsa notte studiato il video delle onde di Mister wave riding Morgan… a domani ciao!”.

Noireax Still Sitting On Top, Whilst Iballa Moreno Is Crowned World Champion Another incredible day at Ho’okipa brings us even closer to crowning the men’s PWA Champions for the Severne Starboard Aloha Classic and the PWA 2014 tour.The call was made early to cancel AWT competition for the day and continue with the PWA. It was double elimination time, which meant a second chance for all the riders that missed out on advancing in the single elimination.Morgan Noireaux is still sitting in prime position, as we didn’t get far enough in the competition to face the final battle for the win. Kai Katchadourian and Graham Ezzy were without a doub two of the stand out riders of the day. The Fly Katcher came charging through two heats with solid aerials and hacking turns. But it was Ezzy who progressed even further, making it all the way to take on Brawzinho. Ezzy delivered some of most impressive heats of the day with takas, goiters and excellent wave selection taking him through time after time… untile he met an on fire Brawzinho. In the dying wind and waves of the day Brawzinho delivered a near perfect heat, with two 9+ waves, numerous full power critical hits, takas and more. Now Browne will go on to face Fernandez Lopez, in the hope of reaching a final heat with Morgan Noireaux. Above images Marcilio Browne and Kai Katchadourian, below Graham Ezzy.

In the women’s fleet Iballa Moreno is officially crowned PWA World Champion as Daida Moreno fails to advance through the first round. French rider Alice Arutkinwas the sailor of the day in the women’s fleet, coming through numerous heats with smooth riding and great linked turns, all the way to fifth position. This fifth place puts Alice in third overall on the world tour too! AWT champion Ingrid Larouche and PWA freestyle queen Sarah-Quita Offringa also made it back through some tough heats with smooth bottom turns and great cut backs. The former Aloha Classic champion Junko Nagoshi has held onto her forth place in the final heat of the day and will now go on to challenge another local rider, Tiffany Ward, for third.Having the women’s PWA competition back in Maui has been fantastic – it has opened up the fleet, provided a whole new stage for the women to showcase their skills and opened up the PWA to women on the other side of the world. We can only wonder if this event might encourage women such as Ingrid Larouche, Sarah Hauser, Fiona Wylde, Tatiana Howard and more to compete in more PWA events?
